Subject: Re: [RichMailList 76]: Comments on _Songs_
Hey Danl,
Thanks for the help, so it IS stoop. :)
To mention my opinions on songs, I agree with others who felt that
_we are Not as Strong_ seemed over-produced as did _Elijah_ remake,
but we were spoiled to hear solo piano versions of these great tunes
on the tour. But I also have to agree that the original version
of _elijah_ seemed more intense and moving, and porbably because
it was recordd with more of a live feel and not so produced. Next
time around Rich should release his favorites, kinda like when Billy
Joel put out his songs in the attic album, not commercially successful
singles but well-loved songs, especially in concert.
I know a while back, Rich in a lecture mentioned that he liked
Celtic music. ME TOO!! But I have been unsuccessful at locating
any Christian Celtic music, actually some of Rich's hammer dulcimer
songs and _The Color Green_ are the most Celtic music I've found in
Christian music. Jars of Clay has a little Celtic influence, and
people always mention Iona, but they lack the traditional folk instruments
which is really what I'm after. Does anybody know which Celtic artists
Rich listens to?

Dan'l,

The version that's on _Songs_ is the radio version (or maybe *a* radio
version). That version is the only version that I ever heard on the
radio when _Pictures_ was his current album.
And now for something completely different:
When _World As Best Vol 1_ came out, there was a folio (aka song book)
released for it at the same time. Was there ever a folio for Vol 2?
That album remains my favorite of all of Rich's albums. Do you know
if a folio was produced, and if so, what the product number (or
something like that) was? If not, can you take it to the mailing
list? Thanks.....
Grace and peace,
Brendt

Hi Julia,
I really like Rich's, even better than Amy's. My wife still likes Amy's better, though.

I have that video. We bought it, right when the album came out. It's the only
one I know of. Although I did see the video to "Brother's Keeper", I haven't
seen it on sale anywhere. For info on getting the Liturgy, Legacy video, call
my friends at the Better Book Room (800-678-6119) here in Wichita. If anyone
can get it for you, they can.

I especially like seeing him do it live, with the hand-clapping, finger-snapping,
cup-passing routine. Have you ever seen that? The last time I saw him do it like
that was at the farewell concert in Wichita (see [RichMailList 16]: Rich Mullins
Farewell To Wichita (5/13))

My number one resource for tracking down Rich's (or any CCM artist for that matter) CDs, tapes, videos, songbooks, etc., whether old or new, is Better Book Room here in Wichita. There number is 800-678-6119.

Hi Danl!
I almost mailed you last week to say that, while an overall excellent cd, I
don't care for _Songs_ much. But, I've listened to it about a gazillion
times since last Monday and I have to say it has grown on me to point that I
really, really like it. My nose still crinkles up when I hear the _Elijah_
remake -- there is too much added in instrumentation and bvg's and it just
pales against the original. And there is a short section of _Sing Your
Praise_ between the Bach intro and the guitars that sounds like _Hooked on
Classics_ or somesuch. (And, oh boy, do I feel really petty and disloyal
for even having those two, very minor complaints.....)
BTW....(this was sparked by a conversation with Brian W.)...Rich has said at
concerts that it offends when people ask what provoked a song, because
whatever the song is about is what provoked it. However, he has given the
story behind particular songs at concerts.....it would be a fun and
interesting diversion to see how many "stories behind the songs" the list
can come up with. Could we do it, or would it be too much work for you to
compile them?
TTFN - Stay cool! (It's projected to be 97 with a heat index of 115 today
in Little Rock -- ugh!) Thank God for air conditioning!

A personel - yes, personal - postcard from Rich Mullins. No, it was not
written by Gay or anyone else on his staff. It is a personal postcard in
response to the letter I wrote to him after hearing him speak at Agape'
in May. I asked him a TON of questions, and asked if he could respond
personally if could in any way find the time. (I also sent him a copy of
that awful picture of me & him). And he wrote back. Isn't that really
cool? It is to me. I'm not really a fan-mail type of person, because I
mean what's the point? "Dear Mr./Ms. famous person: I love your
(whatever) and think you're really cool." "Dear product consumer: Thanks
for your nice letter. It's nice to hear from the people who buy my
(whatever)." Not a real exchange between real people. Anyway......I
wrote and asked him quite a few (ok, a lot) of questions about what he
thinks and what he likes. And he wrote back.
Just the kind of thing to brighten my day.
Later! :)

Hey Danl!
Just wanted to say thanks for the recent mailings. Like everyone
else, I rushed out to get a copy of the new CD and I just love it. Some of
my favorites were of course left off but that's to be expected - every song
RM has written could have been included.
I was interested in the story on "We Are Not As Strong" - I didn't
understand it until I read what it was about. It is certainly a powerful
song and very meaningful to me - as one who was "almost engaged" and broke
up. I was unaware of that part of RM's personal life (even though I have
all his albums I know relatively little about his personal life). I am
wondering, is this the same person who is spoken of in "The River" on Vol. I
- "Maybe she could come to Wichita/ And Maybe We could borrow Beaker's bike/
Let the road wind tie our hair in knots/ let the speed of the wind untangle
the lies/ Oh God - please don't let this love be denied" ? That certainly
adds a new dimension to that song as well. Just curious.
And I simply haven't been able to catch all the lyrics to the new
long version of Screendoor. If you have those I sure would love them. I
guess I'm just a little too slow to figure them all out!!
Again - thanks for all your work on those mailings. I sure do enjoy
them.
Grace and Peace,
Victor

Actually '84 dates back before his first album. He was just moving to
Nashville. He had a tough time getting his first album recorded. From
my understanding and this may not be totally acurate, Brown Banister was
busy with Amy Grant and so another producer listened to his stuff and
walked out saying he wouldn't be ready for at least another year.
Finally Reed Arvin picked him up to produce his first album. He moved
to Witchata something like about '87 or '88. I met him at a church camp
called Deep Valley Christian Service Camp located just outside of
Slippery Rock, PA. A tape was made of his concert there but I lost my
copy. there were some songs on it that he never recorded that I thought
he should have....I did manage to get a tape or a partial tape of a
concert he did at the camp the year before with even some more songs
that he has never recorded that I still think should be. It was at the
camp that I was able to get the Behold the man album. They had a zion
reunion concert but unfortunately I was unable to get a ride to it. I
even managed to get a "zion t-shirt" that I still have....I grew out of
it, but it wasn't wore out so I kept it should I lose weight(hahaha).
Another neat thing about the week of camp was that we got pictures of
everyone at the camp so I can actually produce a picture with Rich and
myself in the same photo along with about 30 other people. I imagine if
I ever get close enough to Rich again I probably should have him sign it
as I assume that it may be worth something someday.
I did at one time also have a tape of rich in concert with his old group
zion but I don't now what happened to that tape.
Have you ever heard the tape rich made for CIY around 1989? It has one
song on it he never recorded and different mixes for 2 or 3 other songs
that have come out.
I did see the list of current concerts wish I would have saw it a few
months ago so I could have gone to the stuebenville concert....
btw, I think your web page is done very well and try to visit it
occasionally.
btw, since i didn't get to answer the opinion on my favorite mullins
song I'll say it now.......it's got to be a tie...the only
problem...neither of them are recorded!!! they are songs on the tapes
of concerts he has done.

Funny, I hadn't realized before that the abundant life included peaches!
Sounds good to me, though. Makes the "music to chew on" much more
meaningful, too.
